Jute burlap, also known as hessian, is a coarse, woven fabric made from the fibres of the jute plant. It was traditionally used as a backing for linoleum, rugs, and carpets. Today, it is often used to make gunny sacks to ship coffee beans and rooibos tea. They are also quite popular in packing cotton, wool, and tobacco, as well as in storing commodities such as sand, pulses, grain, potatoes, onions, and sugar.

It is breathable, so it resists condensation and spoilage of contents. It is also durable enough to withstand rough handling in transit. These properties have also led to its use for temporary protection as a wet covering to prevent rapid moisture loss in the setting of cement and concrete in the construction industry. Hessian is also commonly used to make effective sandbags which are used for flood mitigation in temporary embankments against floodwaters or field fortifications.
